Welcome To Colchester Garrison
Colchester Garrison is the home of the British Army's 16 Air Assault Brigade. The Brigade has 3 Air Assault Infantry Battalions, 2 Air Assault Aviation Battalions, 1 Artillery Regiment, 13 Air Assault Support Regiment and supporting units (engineer, signals, RMP, medical). The Reserve Forces are represented by 4 PARA, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, 299 Para Sqn Royal Engineers, and 37 Signal Regiment (Volunteers). Colchester Garrison has been redeveloped and now has one central camp called Merville Barracks. The Brigade moved into the barracks in 2007. Merville Barracks houses the Headquarters for 16 Air Assault Brigade, Colchester Garrison, 18 Army Education Centre, the WRVS centre and the living accommodation for unaccompanied or single Service Personnel. 16 Air Assault Brigade was formed on 1 September 1999 following the Strategic Defence Review. It was born of an amalgamation of elements of 5 Airborne Brigade and 24 Airmobile Brigade, bringing together the agility and reach of airborne forces with the potency of the attack helicopter.
